In 1951, Frantz Fanon worked alongside Tosquelles at the Saint-Alban Psychiatric Hospital (France). He later moved to Algeria to become head of service at the Blida-Joinville Psychiatric Hospital, where he discovered that many diagnoses did not take into account the human, social and cultural consequences of colonisation and decolonisation. There, his treatment methods evolved, connecting therapies to the cultural context of his patients.
La Bissaperie is a collective invocation of Fanon's memory through a shared reading of his texts and the preparation of bissap (hibiscus flower drink). I propose a friendly and horizontal meeting place focused on the revolutionary ideas of the thinker and a platform for people to connect with their identity, heritage and community.
La Bissaperie was my proposal within the research and activism group ‘Deconstructing the Museum’ at the MNCARS. The performance has travelled to different spaces and institutions in Spain, Germany and Portugal.
